Acute cystitis treatment
Acute cystitis is a disease characterized by the appearance of inflammatory processes in the mucous membrane of the bladder.
Epidemiology and prevalence
Acute cystitis mainly affects women due to the peculiarities of their anatomical structure of the urinary tract (the shorter length of the urethra compared to men). Acute cystitis in women usually occurs between 20 and 40 years of life. Acute cystitis in men occurs hundreds of times less often.The incidence of acute cystitis is high worldwide, especially among women of reproductive age.
Acute cystitis is not a contagious disease.
Causes of acute cystitis
Acute and chronic cystitis in the vast majority of cases is caused by microorganisms that normally live in large quantities in the human intestines (intestinal infection). Due to poor hygiene, hypothermia, and various medical procedures, this infection is carried into the urinary tract.
Acute cystitis is most often caused by intestinal microflora:
- Escherichia coli;
- staphylococcus;
- proteus;
Acute cystitis treatment
Treatment of acute cystitis depends on its cause, form, clinical manifestations and other characteristics of the disease and the patient himself. Treatment of acute cystitis in women and men is not fundamentally different.
Diet for acute cystitis
Any treatment will begin with diet. Proper nutrition provides the body with the necessary resources (proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals) for better and more complete tissue regeneration of damaged epithelium. Diet for acute cystitis is especially important in the presence of metabolic disorders in the body (diabetes mellitus, urolithiasis, gout, etc.)
But there are some general rules in the treatment of all types of cystitis.
Drink plenty of fluids. You need to drink at least 2-2.5 liters of liquid per day. Thus, urine will flush out excess concentrations of harmful substances from the bladder. However, don’t drink just any drink. Alcohol is contraindicated in any quantity, as well as sweet drinks and various lemonades. It is best to drink black or green tea, juices of vegetables and fruits, as well as berries. Lingonberry juice has very beneficial properties, as it is a natural uroseptic that destroys bacteria in the urinary tract.
Products of plant origin. Vegetables and fruits have the property of alkalizing urine, thereby changing the usual acidic environment of pathogenic bacteria in an unfavorable direction. In parallel with this, it is necessary to exclude from the diet spicy, salty, smoked foods, which can lead to an increase in the specific gravity of urine (concentration).
Acute cystitis treatment is etiotropic
This type of treatment involves influencing directly the cause of the disease. Without eliminating the cause, other types of treatment will be ineffective.
In the case of bacterial acute cystitis, the etiotropic treatment will be treatment with antibacterial drugs. For this purpose, special antibiotics are used that act primarily on the organs of the urinary system (i.e., which are excreted by the kidneys and not through the liver and intestines).
